Mangosteen is native to Indonesia, known for the sweetness of its fruit, and medicinal properties of the skin of the fruit, know as the pericarp. The hard rind of the fruit contains xanthones, which are used extensively in pharmacology. Xanthones are antioxidant, anti-thrombotic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, relax the blood vessels, and inhibit platelet aggregation (preventing blood vessel blockage).
